Small device. Important protection.
Surges can enter through utility power or arise when electrical loads switch. A properly selected surge protective device helps limit transient voltage reaching appliances and electronics. It reduces risk; it cannot guarantee protection against every event or a direct lightning strike.
What changed with the 2020 NEC?
Section 230.67 introduced Type 1 or Type 2 surge protection for services supplying dwelling units, including service equipment replacements under that edition. This is not a blanket retroactive requirement that every untouched older home received in 2020. The adopted code and local permitting requirements determine what applies to your project.
